The Printed and Manuscript Americana department under the direction of Director Rick Stattler specializes in books, manuscripts, broadsides, pamphlets, ephemera and historical prints. Its sales include Revolutionary Americana, Mormonism, Colonial Latin America, Western Americana and single-owner collections of Americana.

At Sotheby’s January Fine Manuscript and Printed Americana sale, a first edition of John James Audubon’s (1785-1851) “White-Headed Eagle” sold for $756,000, a world auction record price for the artist and a new world auction record for an oil painting by the artist. Another highlight was a 1608 book by John Smith on his exploration of the Americas, which reached nearly $500,000 with bidding from an online and phone bidder who department head Erik Gronning categorized as “an important private collector.”
